wav2mp3 encodes MP3 with lamejs, a JavaScript port of the LAME MP3 encoder. lamejs is free software distributed under the GNU Lesser General Public License. It is loaded by this site as a separate, unmodified file, so you can replace it with your own build: its full source is linked below.

MP3 patents
The patents on MP3 encoding have expired (the last ones in 2017), so encoding MP3 needs no patent license.
